The scientific literature on giant anteaters states that the animal sleeps with its tail folded over its body to conserve body temperature. However, observations of this species in natural habitats indicate variations in this behavior, depending on the ambient temperature.

Comportamento de termorregulação do jacaré-do-pantanal, Caiman crocodilus yacare. Infoteca-e

A temperatura corpórea de 51 jacarés do Pantanal foi monitorada nos períodos de frio e calor em áreas de lagos e rios. A massa corpórea desses jacarés variou de 2 a 42 kg e seu tamanho afetou a temperatura média e a amplitude corpórea. A temperatura média corpórea alcançou 25oC, na estação fria, e 30oC, na estação quente, com valor mínimo de 16,9 oC e máximo de 37,9 oC. A temperatura corpórea de Caiman crocodilus yacare na natureza variou com temperatura do ambiente nas estações fria e quente. No período quente, os jacarés permaneceram mais tempo em áreas sombreadas, tanto na terra como na água, do que expostos diretamente aos raios solares. Effects of a neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitor on lipopolysaccharide-induced fever BJMBR

It has been demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO) has a thermoregulatory action, but very little is known about the mechanisms involved. In the present study we determined the effect of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibition on thermoregulation. We used 7-nitroindazole (7-NI, 1, 10 and 30 mg/kg body weight), a selective nNOS inhibitor, injected intraperitoneally into normothermic Wistar rats (200-250 g) and rats with fever induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 µg/kg body weight) administration. It has been demonstrated that the effects of 30 mg/kg of 7-NI given intraperitoneally may inhibit 60% of nNOS activity in rats. Luteal phase of the menstrual cycle increases sweating rate during exercise BJMBR

The present study evaluated whether the luteal phase elevation of body temperature would be offset during exercise by increased sweating, when women are normally hydrated. Eleven women performed 60 min of cycling exercise at 60% of their maximal work load at 32ºC and 80% relative air humidity. Each subject participated in two identical experimental sessions: one during the follicular phase (between days 5 and 8) and the other during the luteal phase (between days 22 and 25). Role of nitric oxide in hypoxia-induced hyperventilation and hypothermia: participation of the locus coeruleus BJMBR

Hypoxia elicits hyperventilation and hypothermia, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. The nitric oxide (NO) pathway is involved in hypoxia-induced hypothermia and hyperventilation, and works as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system, including the locus coeruleus (LC), which is a noradrenergic nucleus in the pons. The LC plays a role in a number of stress-induced responses, but its participation in the control of breathing and thermoregulation is unclear. We investigated the following aspects of the biology of a population of Cnemidophorus vacariensis Feltrim &amp; Lema, 2000 during the four seasons: thermal biology, relationship with the thermal environment, daily and seasonal activity, population structure and growth rate. Cnemidophorus vacariensis is restricted to rocky outcrops of the "campos de cima da serra" grasslands on the Araucaria Plateau, southern Brazil, and is currently listed as regionally and nationally threatened with extinction.
